Alcohol & Opiates Detoxification and Stabilisation Treatment

Duration:  Normally 14 days

We use a Librium ( Chlordiazepoxide) detoxification for the Alcohol detoxification, and also commence a Clonidine or Methadone -Opiate detox, whichever the client has chosen. [ please 'click' on Opiate link below to view the Clonodine & Methadone detox details ]

The client is assessed pre- admission and again prior to commencing detox to determine what dose of Librium is appropriate, based on the client's withdrawal symptoms, height, weight and how much alcohol is being used.

If there is a medical reason for not using Librium (e.g.the client has liver failure) our G.P's will prescribe suitable alternatives. 

Carbamazepine (Tegretol) is used to safeguard against Alcohol withdrawal seizures.

In addition to the above, all clients admitted for an Alcohol & Opiate detox will have the following medication:

Pabrinex I.M. daily for 5 days followed by Thiamine and Vitamin B co strong daily for the remainder of the detox period and for 2 weeks after discharge.

All females are pregnancy- tested prior to any dose of any medication being given. If a female client is pregnant our G.P's will be consulted prior to commencing any medications. A letter from the client’s Consultant Obstetrician will be required to confirm that it is safe to commence detox prior to the client's admission.

In addition to the Medical Detoxification,all clients have the benefit of:

3. 24- hour project worker andqualified therapist support

4.Involvement in the Modified 12-Step Therapeutic Stabilisation Programme, and the therapeutic community of the House

5.Sleepy Teas to help develop normal sleep patterns

6.Peer Support at all times.
